The Trail

Follow the 'Walking with Wilberforce' trail to discover places which William Wilberforce, his family and friends would have known - his home and business, the school, the city and the church.

Download the Walking with Wilberforce Trail Guide in PDF format (2MB), or use the interactive map below to explore the trail online.

As a young man in Hull, Wilberforce would have known the lifestyles of both the wealthy and poor people living nearby in the congested city and beside the busy port. There were active slavery abolitionists in Hull and campaigners who influenced his political actions also lived in Hull and Yorkshire.

Hull now takes pride in Wilberforce’s achievements towards the abolition of slavery. It also recognises the commitment of many other people world-wide, who are active for human rights and justice. Visit ‘Names on the Wall’ and learn from ‘Sankofa’ – the Ghanaian mythical bird who ‘returns to its past in order to move forward’. This is a heritage for us all – come and explore it along the Trail.
