The Rest of the World

West Africa Collonial Map

Slavery has existed world-wide for thousands of years, but its worst form was in the trans-Atlantic trade, between Africa and the Caribbean and America in the 16th - 19th centuries.

Although 2007 is the bicentenary of the year of the first breakthrough in abolishing the British trade in slaves, Hull City Council’s annual Wilberforce Lecture and award continue to raise awareness of modern forms of slavery world-wide, as does Hull University’s acclaimed Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation (WISE).

Anti-SlaverySlavery continues in the 21st century, world-wide. Anti-Slavery International was founded in Britain in 1807 and is now is a leading international organisation to inform us about contemporary slavery and to campaign for its eradication world-wide.
